Every year, on the full moon of the Ashadha month (June-July), seekers across India and the world gather to honor the Guru – the dispeller of darkness, the bringer of light.
This day is called Guru Purnima, a time to bow down in gratitude to all teachers who illuminate our path.
🕉️ What is Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima is a sacred festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers. It is the day when disciples express their love, respect, and gratitude for their Gurus, acknowledging the wisdom and guidance that has transformed their lives.
In Sanskrit,
- Gu means darkness (ignorance)
- Ru means remover
Thus, Guru is the one who removes the darkness of ignorance, revealing the light of truth and knowledge.
✨ The Story Behind Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is traditionally celebrated as the day when:
1. Sage Vyasa was Born
This day marks the birth of Sage Ved Vyasa, the author and compiler of the Mahabharata, Puranas, and many Vedic texts. He divided the Vedas into four parts (Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva) for easier understanding and composed the Brahma Sutras to guide seekers on the path of Vedanta.
Hence, it is also known as Vyasa Purnima.
2. Lord Shiva Became the First Guru
In yogic tradition, it is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva became the Adi Guru (First Guru). When his seven disciples (the Sapta Rishis) pleaded for knowledge, he turned southward and shared with them the wisdom of yoga, meditation, and liberation. Thus, he became Dakshinamurthy, the Guru of all Gurus.
3. Buddha Gave His First Teaching
For Buddhists, Guru Purnima is significant because it marks the day when Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment, at Sarnath, setting the wheel of Dharma in motion.
🙏🏽 Why is Guru Purnima Important?
In life, knowledge alone is not enough. We need guidance, reflection, and correction. The Guru not only teaches but transmits wisdom through their being, awakening the same light within the student.
It is said:
“If God and Guru both appear before me, whom should I bow to first? I will bow to the Guru first, for it is he who showed me God.”
On Guru Purnima, we acknowledge that our growth is never in isolation. Behind every breakthrough stands the invisible presence of a teacher’s blessings.
