"On this sacred day, what you ask for in faith, the Divine listens to in full."
In the intricate and divine tapestry of the Hindu lunar calendar, Ekadashi—the 11th day after the full or new moon—is considered a day of spiritual acceleration. But among all the 24 (or 26 in leap years) Ekadashis observed annually, Putrada Ekadashi holds a unique place in the hearts of devotees, especially those seeking the blessings of progeny, prosperity, and inner renewal.
There are two Putrada Ekadashis observed every year:
- One in the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of Pausha (Dec–Jan)
- Another in the Shukla Paksha of Shravan (Jul–Aug)
Though both are called Putrada (meaning “giver of children”), the Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is especially revered by couples longing for a child, while the Shravana Putrada is aligned more deeply with spiritual rebirth, dharma, and karmic healing across generations.
🌿 The Origin Story: A King’s Despair and a Divine Solution
As told in the Bhavishya Purana, once there was a pious king named Suketuman, who ruled over the kingdom of Bhadravati. Despite all his riches and good governance, the king and his queen were sorrowful—they had no children.
In Vedic dharma, to have no heir was believed to create a break in the ancestral lineage (pitru rin) and a block in one's evolution. Desperate, King Suketuman wandered into the forest. There, he encountered sages who advised him to observe Putrada Ekadashi with full faith and devotion.
He did.
And in due time, a radiant son was born—destined to be a great king and spiritual leader.
This is why even today, Putrada Ekadashi is considered the most powerful day to seek blessings for a child, biological or spiritual.
🌼 Putrada = The One Who Gives “Putra”
The word Putra has layered meanings:
- Literally, it means “son” or child—especially one who continues the spiritual lineage.
- Spiritually, putra refers to the fruits of karma, soulful creations, and that which brings light into your future.
So even for those who aren’t seeking a physical child, Putrada Ekadashi offers the power to birth new life, whether that’s:
- A creative project
- A relationship healed
- A generational curse lifted
- A dream finally manifested
🕉 Rituals of the Day
🌅 Fasting (Upavasa)
The primary vow is to abstain from grains, beans, and processed food—considered tamasic (dulling to the mind). Many observe a full fast, while others consume fruits, nuts, and milk.
📿 Chanting & Prayers
- Chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama
- Offering Tulsi leaves, lamps (deepa), and flowers to Lord Vishnu
- Reciting Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha (the story behind the fast)
- Offering water and prayers to Pitru (ancestors)
🙏 Special Affirmation
"O Vishnu, sustainer of life and protector of dharma, may my lineage flourish in purity, and may I be reborn in alignment with truth."
🌠 Why Yogis and Spiritual Seekers Honor This Day
Even if you are not praying for children, Putrada Ekadashi holds deep yogic meaning:
- Kundalini practitioners honor this day to release karmic blocks inherited from ancestors (DNA → karma naadi).
- Spiritual healers use this day for ancestral healing and soul contracts.
- Parents and teachers pray for the well-being, evolution, and dharmic path of the next generation.
It is a day to reflect on your legacy—not just in bloodline, but in action, vibration, and intention.
🌕 The Power of Ekadashi Itself
On every Ekadashi, the subtle currents of energy (prana) flow differently through the body. The lunar influence shifts our consciousness toward clarity, introspection, and devotion.
Putrada Ekadashi magnifies this flow toward new beginnings, especially those aligned with your soul’s next chapter.
